Natural Gas: Energy for the 21st century and the new energy area and the Eastern Mediterranean

At this point I already had an article about the huge new gas finds in the eastern Mediterranean adjusted. Reminder: 2009 and 2010 the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields were found off the Israeli coast, which immediately raised questions as to any claims of Lebanon and the Palestinians (in Gaza are assumed greater occurrence). Israel, however, has not signed the international Seerechtsstatuten, so staking the gas "claim" is not unproblematic.

In the United States there is a geological report that is always updated. This "U.S. Geological Survey" (USGS) in 2010 noted on April 8 for the gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean:

2010: Marking the Levante gas field, the Eastern Mediterranean; Source USGS

"The region of the Levant Basin is comparable to some of the largest natural gas fields worldwide and its gas resources are bigger than anything we have in the United States reviewed to date." Back then, in the speech USGS estimated 122 trillion cubic feet (tcf), thus trillion cubic feet.

In May 2010, the USGS issued an estimate of the entire eastern Mediterranean arc, including the Nile delta and the coast of Turkey and came to a figure of 345 tcf of gas and 3.4 billion barrels of oil. In order to appreciate the immense deposits better, here the comparative figures from other natural gas regions of the world:

Russia, West Siberian Basin: The largest known natural gas field in the world: 643 tcf gas.

Middle East and North Africa (southwestern Saudi Arabia and North Yemen): 426 tcf gas.

The large Ghawar field in eastern Saudi Arabia: 227 tcf gas, moreover, also oil.

The Zagros field that runs along the Persian Gulf in Iran and Iraq: 212 tcf gas.

The comparative figures given may suffice to illustrate the relevance of the eastern Mediterranean as a new energy space. The map shows that both the Palestinians and Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece are sitting in gas in the same boat and compete.

Something important matters worse: In July 2011, Syria joined with Iran and Iraq contracts for a new gas pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean from. This is novel because Syria befände thus in the center of a new energy space, as analysts noticed immediately. Syria would thus be involved in the production, storage and transport of energy. The new energy-strategic pivot Write Syria and the project of a gas pipeline are of course in direct competition:

Nabucco is called the strongly advocated by the USA and the EU pipeline project, but the lack of progress so pretty and its construction has been postponed to 2013. It is unclear, especially where the Nabucco gas will come exactly. The Caspian it should be, but perhaps also the Iranian, Iraqi or Egyptian.

The proposed Syrian-Iraqi-Iranian gas pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the eastern Mediterranean would be due to the localization of gas sources, especially in competition with Nabucco.

A few days ago we heard that had attacked and occupied in Deir Ezzor-"rebels" the Syrian oil fields. An independent confirmation, but not before. Repeats were "rebels" already attacked Syrian pipelines and oil depots.

Al-Ward is one of the major oil fields in Deir Ezzor-and is very important for Syria's energy supply.

95% of Syrian oil was purchased before the start of the 2011 sanctions by the EU.

Here are some impressions from the attacks of the Islamist terrorist rebel militias in the oil city of September this year. (Note: cruel images).

Deir Ezzor-is the center of the Syrian Petroleum Industry. In addition to the so-called rebel forces FSA (Free Syrian Army) fight there also an Al-Qaeda offshoot: the notorious Al-Nusra front.

These take all their actions on cell phone video and roar with every shot or Folterakt "Allahu Akbar" - their deeds they proudly Upload all on Youtube, no greater blasphemy could be.

The position of Syria as potential energy hub should receive more attention in the assessment of the proxy war in Syria.

A very informative report. Since you can still learn a lot to it.

  2. [...] The Iranian announcement raises concerns that an energy strategic dimension in the Western action against the participating countries increased since the project is in competition with Nabucco dierekter and also Iran over Syria would open a direct sales market in Europe.
